Welcoming Nicole: Full-Stack Expertise, Scottish Charm 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤩

Say hello to Nicole, the newest addition to our software development team! Nicole joins us from picturesque Scotland with a rich background in full-stack development and a zest for turning concepts into reality. Let’s delve into a compact Q&A, exploring her tech journey, inspirations, and a few fun, surprising snippets from her life outside work.

Please tell us a little about yourself and the role you’ll be taking on here at Adapt.

I’m Nicole, I’m 24, and I’m from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. I’ve previously worked as a Full Stack Engineer for a startup company, and I’ll continue with Full Stack Development in my new role at Adapt.

What inspired you to pursue a career in software development, and how did your journey begin?

I was inspired to pursue a career in software development while I was in high school. I actually picked Computer Science in my National 5s as I had a free column that needed filling but I had a great teacher who helped me develop my passion for programming and then went on to do Software Engineering at University.

In the realm of software development or technology, is there a specific area or technology that you are particularly passionate about?

I’m more passionate about software development as a whole rather than a specific area at this moment in time. There’s something exciting about seeing an idea and/or design on a piece of paper which then materialises into a fully functional website or application.

Can you share a highlight or a challenging experience from your previous role that has significantly shaped your career?

A highlight of my career so far is creating software with the intent to make a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to carry the perspective of using my skills to help people from my last role and I am excited that I will be continuing this with Adapt.

What are you most looking forward to accomplishing in your new role here?

I’m most excited about expanding my knowledge and skills and working alongside talented developers who I can learn from.

Outside of your professional skills, what’s something you’re currently trying to improve or learn in your personal life?

Currently, I’m trying to learn Spanish in my spare time. I go to Spain a few times a year and would love to be able to fully immerse myself in the culture.

If you could only read one book or watch one movie for the rest of your life, which book or movie would it be and why?

One movie I could watch on repeat would be ‘A Cinderella Story’. It just reminds me of winter nights when I was younger, all cosy next to the fire… There are lots of these in Scotland!

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation outside of work?

Outside of work I like to spend my time with family and friends and go big walks with my dog. I also like to go and watch the football and I play for a local team every sunday.

What keeps you motivated and driven, both in your personal and professional life?

In both my personal and professional life I like to set targets for myself which in turn keeps me very motivated as I am constantly striving for that sense of accomplishment and meeting my goals.

Tell us something surprising about yourself that your professional network might not know.

The most surprising thing that my professional network might not know is that I’m only 5ft tall 😂 I’ve always worked remotely and any time I’ve met people face to face after only working together via video call they always thought I would be taller – it is hard to tell from the shoulders up 😅

If you could bring one thing to our team (it could be a skill, a snack, a game, etc.), what would it be and why?

I would bring a bottle of Irn Bru and tablet, only because i think everyone has to try them at least once and they aren’t the most popular snacks outside of Scotland!
